St Martin
Saint Martin is the smallest island that is shared by two different countries. It is owned by France and the Netherlands Antilles. The small island is only 37 square miles. The French own 2/3 of the land mass and the Netherland Antilles own the other third. The 2/3 is part of Europe, though not culturally. The island may be split into two countires, but it isn’t obvious. There are a couple of signs where the island splits, but nothing big. St. Marteen has the longest standing treaty throughout the world. More than 350 years ago the French and Dutch signed the Concordia Agreement, which stated that citizens from either country could freely go to whatever side of the island. Citizens of the island live in small villas throughout the 37 square miles.

Sint Maarten may be small but it has stunnign land. The terrain is rugged and interesting, roads goes up and down hills and land there isn’t filled with buildings. The beach is bright and there are tons of stores and restaurants in the small area.

St. Maarten is known as the “yachting center of the Caribbean.” Huge yachts are kept in the bay at Saint Martin. The population is now at 75,000 which is huge for such a small island. Tourism keeps the small island going. There are villas that have been up for years that are a giant tourist attraction. The town has a home town feeling with sights that are hard to find. Celebrities come to Sint Maarten for the sightseeing and to visit the small villas and sail in the ocean.

I love the Caribbean
Once a year my wife and I rent a villa on the island of St. Martin for two weeks. All year, that’s all we think about consistently. We spend our mornings soaking in the hot sun on the white sandy beach. I love to go snorkeling and she likes to lie in a hammock and read. The last time we were there, I swam out about a hundred yards. A stingray the size of a small car swam about five feet beneath me. At first, I was scared. I froze in place as it glided by me without even acknowledging my existence. It was awesome.

In the afternoons, my wife likes to go shopping at Phillipsburg. It’s the shopping Mecca of St. Maarten that Oprah likes because of the “blooming bags.” We spend hours at a time browsing through the local arts and crafts. Everywhere we go, the vendors are eternally enthusiastic.

At night, there are plenty of nightclubs and casinos scattered throughout the island. Personally, I prefer sitting at a nice restaurant while enjoying live music from a local band. Nothing beats food and music.

I am kind of a history buff. I am constantly searching for historical sites to explore. One of my favorite historical spots on the island of Sint Maarten is the Fort St. Louis on Marigot Bay. It’s a bit of a steep climb to get there. Once there the view is amazing. King Louis the XVI ordered the construction while in Versailles. The fort has been occupied by both French and Dutch troops.

Another one of my favorite places to visit is the St. Maarten museum in Phillipsburg. The Caribbean is full of exciting history from pre-Columbus all the way to the present. Every time we go, we find something else exciting to do.

Have you ever dreamed of a place with beautiful beaches, friendly people, and a ton of adventure activities? If so, you’re dream is actually a reality. St marteen is the only place on Earth that has two nations within 37 square miles. How is this possible? It’s because the people who live there put friendliness and hospitality before anything else. st marteen also has people of over 80 nationalities, proving that it’s a true melting pot of happiness.

There is also so much to do on Sint Maarten. Of course, the pristine beaches are the number one attraction. You can find them all over the island. And if you want a special treat, you can head over to Pinel Island. If you want something more exciting than a beach, you can go snorkeling, scuba diving to see octopus, or even take part in the 12-metre challenge boat race. The latter uses actual boats from the 1987 America’s Cup and is sure to be one of the most exciting experiences of your life. More laid back sailing expeditions are also available.

When you visit St. Martin, you will notice that there’s an eclectic blend of European and American cultures, making it one of the most unique places on Earth. Sint Maarten offers exciting nightlife, shopping that can’t be found outside of the Caribbean, gourmet food, a superb climate, and a safe environment no matter where you go. You will get the most from your stay if you choose to stay at St martin villas, which you will notice to be a unique and gratifying experience in itself.

The US dollar is the currency used on St. Marteen. Population and tourism skyrocketed after WWII, when the US built air strips there to defend against German u-boats. Since that time, the island has been nothing but peaceful.

This was no ordinary pelican, he (I’m assuming) had a huge wing span and followed my family and I around like a puppy.

We walked down to the pier one night and he must have followed us home about 2 miles on foot. I have never seen anything like it. He flew away once we had gotten back to our fantastic st martin villa rental though!

I will never forget the pelican that my son decidedly named “BirdBrain”

The Island of Saint Martin (french spelling) has multiple ways in which it can be spelled including Sint Marteen, Maartens, Maartin, Marten, Marteens, Martins, Martaan, Martan and Martens.

This can be confusing to a lot of people but here around the island we don’t care how you spell it, as long as you are enjoying yourself.
